After the harrowing few weeks leading up to the Game of Thrones finale, I was in the mood to watch something light and funny so when I was surfing through the new titles on Netflix, I was immediately drawn to “I Hear You,” a pretty standard 24-episode Chinese drama with a young cast headlined by Chinese idol Riley Wang and Zhao Lu Si. My verdict Perfect palette cleanser. Synopsis Renowned violin maker Ye Shuwei Riley Wang is roped into participating in an online reality show by his nephew Yu Sheng Yuan Hao where he is forced to pretend to be in a relationship with aspiring voice actress Bei Erduo Zhao Lu Si, who does the stint as a favor to her best friend Tang Lizi Gratitude Dai. The pair don’t get along at first due to a prior encounter before the show but as they grow closer, they begin to fall in love with each other. As I said, its pretty standard. This plot has been cycled and recycled countless times — a tsundere who gradually but surely falls for a cute and optimistic down on her luck heroine. However, when audiences knowingly choose to watch this tried and tested formula, its a given that the show will find a receptive audience. Personally, I binged through the show for three days and finished it last night. There were tons of issues of course. First off, there was rough transitioning and awkward editing that messed with the consistency of the mood. Case in point, Shuwei, and Erduo would part with a semblance of understanding but in the next scene, they would be cold toward each other, and vice versa. Erduo’s mom was firmly against her daughter dating Shuwei but when they meet again for the show’s second season, she was very warm towards him even before she found out he was rich. Riley Wang also needs to work on his acting because even as a tsundere or a cold character, he was a bit too stiff like the violin Shuwei makes in the series. Good thing he has great chemistry with his leading lady which balances it out. The show also sets up for big conflicts but these are quickly swept under the rug. Losing a huge amount of people’s money to a scam should have been a bigger issue but it seemed as if the neighbors quickly forgave Erduo’s mom as if not only two minutes ago, they were ready to burn her at the stakes. It would have made more sense if the victims asked their family to compensate for the lost money, which would put Erduo in a bigger financial pickle than simply losing their own savings. The villains were a joke and the third part Le Tian Zhang Jiong Min was super annoying and rude, always popping up where he wasn’t even invited and expecting to be treated politely. I’m Team Shuwei all the way. For a drama that is entitled “I Hear You” and a lead character that was involved in music, I would have expected that Erduo’s talent in finding the perfect pitch would have played more significance to their story and connected them on a deeper level. But then, they simply used it as a title for Shuwei’s song and made it into a backdrop for a lengthy montage of their love story. The final two episodes had reams of dialogue too mainly because they ran out of conflict to resolve. As a fan, I would have inserted more sweet scenes and kisses instead of focusing on the LDR issues that were technically a non-issue. I felt too that the resolutions to the relationship issues were rushed, Lizi rushing to marry Mars because he was the opposite of her first love — Shuwei deciding to drop everything to go to Japan with Erduo. He doesn’t have to be there full time. He could just as well fly in and out and manage his business from both ends. He makes violins and that can very well be done in a different location. Duh. That was a bit of a stretch, I admit. So after all of these problems, why did I still spend roughly 1080 minutes of my life that’s 18 hours to watch this show? Simple. Shuwei and Erduo were cute. Even their height difference was adorable. Their love story oftentimes made no sense but it brought a smile to my face seeing these two innocents pussyfoot around each other and fail repeatedly to convey their true feelings for each other. I particularly liked that Shuwei was the first to fall, but because he was clueless when it came to relationships, he resorted to childish tactics like blackmailing his employees to invite his “girlfriend” to their party, inventing reasons to drop by her house, only to cement his good standing with her mom, impress her with musical pedigree and buy her, and only her coconut milk in a workshop dominated by coffee drinking men. It was sweet and romantic. He is also super jealous and often expresses it in a pathetic way. This is all of the show’s promises delivered in a snap. It is true that Riley Wang may need to work on his acting but his smile is priceless, so is Zhao Lu Shi’s laughter and charm. And I was charmed. Sometimes, timing is everything and I watched “I Hear You” at a time I only wanted to feel love and happiness. This is all that this show promises so if you don’t mind the issues that I have presented, go ahead and follow my lead. Numb your brain for 18 hours and enjoy this show. I personally enjoy the 'pretend couple becomes real' trope. From episode 17 onward, I felt like the plot lost momentum and then finally, several elements of the final two episodes really bothered Shu Wei Riley Wang is a successful and talented violin maker who doesn't like other people, and he grows a lot throughout the show as he begins to care about Bei Er Duo Zhao Lusi. Bei Er Duo is kind and determined; she has a dream of becoming a voice actress and her goal is to study abroad in Japan. I loved that she was always studying, working hard to improve herself, and wanted to rely on her talent not connections. Ye Shu Wei and Bei Er Duo slowly grow to care for each other, and since they are both inexperienced in love, they feel like an even-leveled match despite him being rich and successful. But to be honest, their relationship is pretty boring. There were some cute moments and some cringey moments but nothing memorable. I actually felt like Shu Wei put much more effort and heart into their relationship, in trying to understand her, encourage her, and prepare surprises for her. But Riley Wang's stony-faced acting bored me.Shu Wei and Er Duo agreeing to be on a couples competition show seemed like a far-fetched premise but the characters Yu Sheng and Tang Li help make it a little believable since they are the producers? for the show. Tang Li's character arc is fantastic and is the one great thing in this show. I loved that she faced her feelings head on, stuck to her principles, and worked hard to find her own happiness. Her storyline wasn't what I expected, but she articulated it well when she explained her decisions to Er Duo. The maturity of her character was such a sharp contrast to Er Duo's childish behavior.*SPOILERS BELOW*As for the last two episodes... I hated the two phone calls that Er Duo receives. Why did other people feel like they had the right to blame Er Duo for Shu Wei's choices? I liked that Er Duo sat down with him at the beach and talked about it honestly but why did Shu Wei not respond? Even though Er Duo returned the ring, it felt so inconclusive. Also, if he really wanted to give up violin making/didn't care about that major violin order, I can respect his choice. The last straw for me was how Er Duo chose to separate from Shu Wei. They had checked in their luggage and he was being paged for the flight so it just made no sense on so many levels. At the very least she could have sent him a text message after clearing security. The last scene was so strange and inconclusive. I wish that instead she had said at the beach, hey don't come to Japan with me, don't give up your work and let's date long distance for now and see how it goes... Belum lagi Er Duo galau karena harus memilih cita-citanya pergi ke Jepang atau tetap bersama Ye Shu Wei. Belum lagi hubungan Tang Li dan Ye Sheng mempengaruhi mereka. Tapi keduanya akhirnya menemukan jalan mereka untuk bisa tetap bersama. Kisahnya Memang Klasik tapi Tidak Membosankan Drama Cina memang sedang berkembang belakangan ini, pasalnya genrenya tidak kalah bermacam-macam dari drama Korea. Meski begitu drama romantis dan komedi memang selalu menjadi drama yang punya banyak penggemarnya. Salah satunya adalah drama I Hear You 2019, drama yang berhasil membuat nama Riley Wang dan Lusi Zhao makin di kenal. Drama I Hear You ini memang bukan drama yang memiliki premis rumit, justru drama ini sangat simpel. Dimana kisah yang diambil merupakan kisah cinta yang klasik dan memang sudah biasa ada di berbagai drama romatis. Benci menjadi cinta, hal inilah yang digambarkan dalam drama I Hear You, dimana hubungan tanpa perasaan justru berubah jadi voucher streaming Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video, Viu, dll murah di Lazada Selain itu drama ini tidak memiliki konflik dan plot twist yang membuat penonton merasa tercengang. Drama ini sangat santai, konfliknya lebih pada pilihan yang diambil oleh Lusi Zhao dan Riley Wang. Kisah cinta yang lebih komplek justru diberikan dari pasangan Gratitude Dai dan Yuan Hao. Pasalnya hubungan mereka memang lebih bergejolak dan sedikit rumit dibanding pemeran utamanya. Tapi penempatan konfliknya bisa saya katakan cukup tepat, pasalnya sutradara dan penulis tahu kapan harus merubah highlight cerita. Dimana pada paruh pertama mereka lebih menekankan hubungan salah famah Bei Er Duo dan Ye Shu Wei. Di tengah-tengah mereka merubah highlight dengan memberikan bumbu cinta komplek dari Tang Li dan Ye Sheng. A transição de estranhos para amigos, do olhar de carinho para o amor é bem delicinha de assistir. Bei Er Duo é uma garota fofa e adorável e bem resolvida. Ela é o tipo de garota enérgica e ativa, enquanto Ye Shu Wei é exatamente o oposto. Ele é sereno, frio e não gosta de se explicar, por isso é fácil interpretar mal suas intenções na maior parte do tempo. Eu disse que esse C-drama tinha casal para dar problema, e aqui vai a segunda história de amor da trama. Tang Li é uma garota independente que tem excelentes atitudes para o trabalho, ousa amar e deixar ir! Ela é apaixonada por You Sheng desde que ainda estava na escola e, desde então, o segue. Na empresa, ela se torna seu braço direito, quem ele mais confia em sua vida profissional. Depois de um tempão nesse chove e não molha, ela coloca o cara na parede e confessa seus sentimentos, afinal, quem é que aguenta uma situação assim? Demonstra cuidados excessivos, trata como namorada, mas na hora do “vamô vê”, ela é só a amiga e parceira nos negócios. Pois bem, no momento em que é questionado, o cara não conseguiu dar a Tang Li uma resposta clara. E foi aí que eu queria entrar na TV só pra dar um abraço nela!
